A MARCIA HIGGS & DIS-N-DAT BAND
MARCIA HIGGS, is a reggae performer, songwriter, educator, tours and travel consultant at Boston Logan International Airport, was born and raised in Jamaica to musical parents, Joe Higgs, also known as the "Father/God-Father of Reggae" and mother Sylvia Richards, a singer in her own right, whose voice can be heard singing harmonies on the Wailers tracks, "Chances Are," "Simmer Down," and more.
Marcia's love for music came to light in 1976, when she performed at a concert, put on by the Girls Guide Association of Jamaica, of which she was also a leading cookie-selling member. :) Following that event, she performed for an official ceremony at the Jamaica Red Cross Society for the Governor General of Jamaica, Honorable Florizel Glaspole.
However, her first paid performance came about when her sister, Angella Higgs, who was then a full-time student at Lenora's School of Beauty Culture, had the faculty pay her to perform for the graduation ceremony of that year.
In 1978, she did her first studio recording with the legendary bass player of the Wailers band, Aston "Familyman" Barrett, who was now husband to her sister, Angella Higgs-Barrett. The various artist album, titled Juvenile Delinquent, was distributed on the Clappers label by VP Records in New York and Greensleeves Music Inc, in London.
In 1987, Marcia teamed up with the identical twin sisters, Pauline and Paulette Robinson, to form the dancehall reggae trio, Higgs & Twin. Their debut single, "Down In The Ghetto," was released that summer on the King Jammy's label, swinging bars and lighting up the airways, and in popular demand, the group added a slew of singles to their catalog, such as, "Them Can't Test We," "Jump Up Time," “We Ah Say One," "Africa Must Be Free," "Mi Lover," "Chant Down Oppression," "Glamour Girl,"
"Poverty Haffi Done," to mention a few.
In 1989, the group was tapped to perform Pam Hall's composition entitled, "Girls' Time," aka "Lie Dem A Tell Pon We," for the JCDC Song Festival Competition. After weeks of extensive traveling and performances across the island, Higgs & Twin won the Best Performance Award and a cash prize of $5,000 which was given to charitable needs.
Higgs & Twins have had the pleasure of working with many solo artists, singing background vocals for most and appearing on stage with some, leaving their indelible mark on projects, such as Lovindeer's 1988 hurricane anthem, "Wild Gilbert." The Trio also had the privilege of singing background vocals for him at Reggae Sunsplash and even accompanied him, opening for American Legends, The Temptations.
The group soon got the opportunity to perform at Reggae Sunspalsh on their own merit. e group soon earned the opportunity to perform as "Higgs & Twin" at Reggae Sunsplash; D.J Roll Call; Red Label Reggae Cable; Reggae Sting; Fort Clarence Beach Bash and too many to mention.
Higgs & Twin separated 1990, and Marcia left Jamaica for Los Angeles. However, she continued recording as a soloist and doing background vocals for various artists, including Alpha Blondy's album, "Jerusalem," and Joe Higgs' album, "Triumph."
Over the years, Marcia Higgs has graced many stages, including, but not limited to Reggae Sunsplash, Reggae Japansplash, Reggae In The Rock, Reggae On The River, Topanga Fest, Weedbeat Reggae Fest, Woodbury Fest, Revolutionary Women & Reggae, Red Label Reggae Cable, Winter Splash and the Universal Amphitheater.
She remains active on the music scene, commanding stages here. She also hosts a weekly blog talk radio show entitled. Positive Reasoning With Marcia Higgs.
